Skin-Care - How to prevent Acne

by Scott Goodman

For most of us that take pride in the way we look, the thought of suffering with acne or Zits, may at first seem awful; but things are gradually improving for sufferers. It is one of those areas where research has continued to make advancements; this is good news with the range of effective skin care treatments improving all the time. Despite the number of acne skin care products currently available on the market, they are broadly categorized into three distinctly separate groups:

Drugstore: Preventative treatment

Over-the-counter

Prescription only treatments

General or preventative acne products form a large section of the skin care market; this sector deals with skin creams, lotions and cleansers that can help stop the problem. This is a market where many people use this type of product every day to condition their skin; there use is not just confined to individuals who are suffer with the complaint. Other acne skin care products, like skin cleansers for instance, are more specific about their job; they clean out the pores to help stop sebum or oil which can clog these areas. When the pores become clogged with this oil, bacteria which can cause the problem begin to grow.

Other skin care treatments can help exfoliate the skin; there is now a variety of this type of product available over the counter. The peels clean the skin by removing all surface pollution and dead skin cells which can block the pores. There is a huge market for these types of acne skin care products as they don’t require a consultation with a dermatologist. These products have benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid as ingredients which cause a bad reaction in the bacterium. these include creams, cleansers and peels that slow down acne formation.

It is often a good idea to start with a product that has lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide (e.g. 5 percent) to see how the skin responds; alpha-hydroxy-acid based moisturizers are a safer skin care regime alternative if there is a problem. As with any type of zit cream, you may need to try a few acne skin care products until you find one that will suit your skin; however, if nothing you try seems to work, you should contact a dermatologist. There are benefits of seeing your doctor or dermatologist, they can prescribe you with a prescription for treatments not available over the counter, for example a course of antibiotics.

In more serious cases your skin care specialist may decide that a small surgical procedure can be used to remove the oil and infection from your pores; this is not something you should ever attempt yourself. An alternative that has been shown to work well is hormone therapy; studies show that hormone based skin care treatments often prove effective. Science has produced many effective treatments for this unkind condition.
